The FACTORY 2019 is an international art exhibition installed in an old abandoned herring factory in one of the most remote places in Iceland, Djúpavík, in the West Fjords, from June 1 to August 31, 2019.

The FACTORY 2019 showcases a multitude of visual arts: sculptures, photography, paintings, sound, mixed media, video art, and installations. By bridging contemporary art with the old herring factory, the building gains a new meaning where history and contemporary art merge in a dialogue with individual artists. The goal is to support the community and the artists, and to honor Iceland and its inspiring influence on people via art and culture.

I was invited to create an installation in one of the spaces in this huge factory building. My space is a former workshop touched only by time over many decades. It is a rectangular room with high ceilings, 5 meters by 10 meters by 5 meters (16’ by 32’ by 16’). It is without heat or electricity, but with large windows facing south and west that provide lighting that can transform the translucent material of my work, depending upon the time of day. At various times of the day, some areas of the installation may seem dormant while others light up.
